The following message came from BikeABQ member Karl Malivuk over the listserv:

Hi All;
Tonight about 7pm I was riding the Embudo/Paseo de las Montanas trail. I had just crossed the I-40 overpass at Winrock and was rounding the corner at Jerry Cline Tennis Complex when I saw water on the trail. I kept riding until the water came up to my hubs. I had to get off and walk and eventually the water came up to my knees! The flooding extends half-way into the Louisiana Blvd underpass and for several dozen yards towards Constitution.

When I reached a dry section I called 311 to report the incident. It turns out that someone else had reported it at 11am this morning. Beware if you plan to use this section and don’t hesitate to let the City know if the problem continues to exist.
Thanks
Karl

Stay safe and dry out there, folks!

Update: This from Mary Ann Sweeney, BikeABQ and NMTS member:

I was the one who called this morning at ~11 am. I had the misfortune of miscalculating the depth. I was going rather fast coming from the west and could not stop in time. The water also came I above my knees and I ended up toppling into the water. When I called 311, they told me to call 242-6277 instead (not sure that I remember the number correctly) and I then spoke to a policeman. The person at that number said that several people had called earlier about it. I would have thought that at least a warning sign would have been put up…..It appears as if it might be a water main problem rather than just rain.

Mary Ann

Meeting’s location: Seasons Rotisserie and Grill on 2031 Mountain Rd. NW

New City Administration

Jennifer arranged for a meeting with the City’s new administration staff. It seems they will be supportive. The new Mayor and his family ride bicycles.

Ghost Bikes

Ben suggested the BikeABQ Board should wait to discuss the issue of the City respecting Ghost Bikes as “descansos” until the Board knows how the new administration will work with us. State law does not describe what a “descanso” is.

October Minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report was approved.

2010 National Bike Rally

BikeABQ has been designated to provide entertainment for the 2010 National Bike Rally. Craig suggested Lynette Chang from Bike Friday to come as a speaker. Martha suggested our representatives in Congress should be here. The banquet will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Bike Valet Funds

Tip jar money collected at the Balloon Fiesta Bike Valet tent amounted to almost $650. BikeABQ will form a Committee to determine the best way to spend this fund. Martha suggested we work with Planet Bike. Jennifer also suggested working with BTI, a bike parts outfit from Santa Fe. The Committee should consider contacting Chuck Malagodi to give some input in this decision.

Online Membership Payments

Jennifer said many people have asked her about paying for BikeABQ membership online. Ben will look into this.

Martha moved to adjourn and Julian seconded at 8:40pm.

How is your commute? What do you think would help improve transportation in the long run – such as 20+ years from now? Would you like to be able to take the bus or some other form of transportation? Perhaps you are worried about congestion or air quality? The 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan provides a long–range vision for transportation in this region. To best develop this vision we need to hear from you! Please take our public transportation survey. Your input will be used to help develop the 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan.

Anyone who travels in the central New Mexico metropolitan region is encouraged to take this survey by Friday February 12, 2010. Survey results will be posted here in March, 2010.

The 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan provides a vision on the 20+ year horizon for transportation based on several inputs such as, public perspective, municipal goals, current conditions and socioeconomic projections. This plan will be completed in June 2011, but now is the time to get involved.

If you can brave fighting for the remaining traffic lane for 100 feet or so, you can turn down Mulberry and bike up through the Spruce Park neighborhood, turning down Las Lomas to get to UNM campus.

Westbound MLK so far is construction free. I’m not sure how long the construction will last, but judging by the extent of the trenches, I would assume at least a few weeks.
